Get an ID - South Africa
ID documentThe green bar-coded identity document, or ID book, is the basic form of proving identity in South Africa. Being able to prove who you are is very important for taking part in the economy and having access to basic services. Without an ID book, you can't open a bank account, can't apply for government grants, would struggle to apply for work and can't vote. Getting your ID book is your first step to fast forward your future – and it's free!

How long does it take?
Approximately 2 months

Who can apply?
South African citizens and permanent residents of 16 years and older.

Where can you apply?
At any regional or district office of the Department of Home Affairs.

What do you need to bring along?

  • 4 photographs
  • A certified copy of your birth certificate and/or a reference book number, or, if applicable,
a copy of the TBVC-countries' identity or travel document should be submitted.
  • If a person is married, the marriage certificate must be submitted.
  • An immigrant who applies for the initial issue of an identity document has to attach his/
her permanent residence permit, naturalization or exemption certificate, where applicable.

What form do you complete?
You have to complete form BI-9 in black pen. If you're an immigrant and your permanent residence permit or exemption certificate cannot be supplied, you must complete form BI-829. If your naturalization certificate cannot be supplied, you need to apply for a duplicate before submitting the initial application form BI-9.
The fingerprints required on the reverse side of form BI-9 can only be taken by an official of the Department at a regional or district office.

ID photographs basics
