THE PROGRAMME

Rollout

Selection of Countries
GOLD collaborates with community organisations according to a structure defined by national and provincial geographic boundaries. GOLD implements its roll out strategy by identifying and selecting priority areas in Sub Saharan Africa. This structure enables implementing organisations within the same country or province to be a part of an informal “community of practice” and therefore support each other in the implementation of their individual programmes. Good practices from across the different areas are disseminated and shared with all GOLD implementing organisations irrespective of the geographic boundaries. This is facilitated via GOLD Head Office, whose primary role is to develop and implement strategies, policies and products to support GOLD Peer Education in all implementing areas.

Selection of Community Implementing Organisations
Once a country has been selected, GOLD carefully assesses, selects and collaborates with viable community organisations to implement peer education, in alignment with the GOLD Peer Education Model, in their individual communities. These organisations are referred to as implementing organisations (IO’s).

Roll Out Selection Criteria
GOLD selects countries, provinces, implementing organisations and implementation sites according to the following high level criteria:

  1. Where the need is greatest (High incidence of HIV amongst youth and high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in the area; High numbers of orphans and vulnerable children with low numbers of adult role models; High incidence of risky behaviour amongst youth; Lack of sustainable long term programmes in place).
  2. Where the geographical circumstance provides diverse contexts from which GOLD can learn.
  3. Where there is healthy stakeholder support and potential collaboration in place (Political will and potential Government support; already established relationships of GOLD collaborative stakeholders with potential implementers; local stakeholders in favour of GOLD implementation.
  4. Where there are Resources to deliver GOLD adequately (Funding for GOLD to roll out with a sustainable plan; funding for GOLD implementing organisations to deliver the programme with a sustainability plan; human resource capacity of GOLD to deliver its services).
  5. Where there are potential implementing organisations and schools or community sites with adequate capacity and functionality for GOLD to work with them.
  6. Where the area and implementation sites strategically benefit GOLD (Assists to strengthen positioning in line with Sub-Saharan Vision; assists GOLD to gain on the ground learnings for future growth.)
